Ingenuity Is the Only Resource We've Never Run Out Of
I've always been a sucker for big ideas. Not the tidy, PowerPoint kind — the ones that show up half-formed at 11 p.m. and refuse to leave. A machine that folds space. A city that grows its own food. A cure that arrives a decade early because someone refused to accept the timeline. I don't remember a version of myself that wasn't a little obsessed with the future and the people reckless enough to go build it before it was ready to be built.
What I've come to believe, from writing about the people who chase those ideas, is that the obsession isn't naive. It's the only realistic response to the problems actually in front of us.
Here is the case for optimism, stated plainly: every crisis we now call intractable — climate change, a hollowed-out middle, a politics that has forgotten how to disagree without dissolving — is, underneath the rhetoric, a resource problem. We assume the scarce resource is money, or time, or political will. It isn't. The scarce resource is ingenuity, and it's the one input on that list we have never actually run out of.
Consider climate. The popular narrative treats it as a morality play — restraint versus indulgence, sacrifice versus comfort. That framing has produced thirty years of summits and not nearly enough atmosphere-scrubbing progress. The more useful framing, the one that's quietly winning, is engineering: geothermal wells drilled with oil-field precision, batteries chemistry didn't think were possible five years ago, fusion reactors that treat "unlimited clean energy" as a design spec rather than a slogan. None of that required humanity to become more virtuous. It required a few thousand stubborn people to treat an impossible problem as a merely difficult one.
Economic opportunity has the same shape. We talk about it as redistribution — who gets a bigger slice — when the more interesting question is why the pie stopped growing in the places that need it most. Every region that has pulled itself out of stagnation did it the same way: by making it cheap and fast for someone with a good idea and no credentials to test that idea against reality. Ingenuity doesn't ask for a pedigree. It asks for a chance. Most of our policy apparatus is better at protecting incumbents than creating chances, which is a fixable design flaw, not a law of nature.
And political divisiveness — the one that looks least like an engineering problem — might be the most familiar one of all. We've built a public conversation optimized for outrage instead of iteration, for going viral instead of getting it right. That's not fate. It's an interface, and interfaces can be redesigned by the same species that redesigned everything else it didn't like. I don't think we solve polarization by asking people to feel differently. I think we solve it the way we solve every other hard problem: by building better tools for disagreeing productively, and by remembering that the person across the table is usually working the same problem from a different angle, not a different planet.
I bring this up not because I have the fix for any of it. I bring it up because I've spent my career in the room with the people who do — the scientists, the founders, the policy obsessives who can't let a broken system alone. What they share isn't optimism as a personality trait. It's a stubborn, almost irrational refusal to accept that a hard problem is a permanent one. That refusal is ingenuity's raw material, and it is, as far as I can tell, inexhaustible.
We are not short on problems worth solving. We have never been short on the thing required to solve them. The gap between those two facts is the most interesting story of our time, and I intend to keep telling it.
